This design, conceived in 2021, echoes a sentiment long expressed by the Indigenous community, and pre-dates its broader recognition by the media in recent headlines.

This design pays homage to the Indigenous roots of Toronto, with "Tkaronto" deriving from the Mohawk language, meaning 'where the trees are standing in the water.'
